Vacation in Murau: New EU-Countries Cause Tourism Boom
EU-Project EUGEM Highlights New Perspectives
The number of vacationers from new EU-countries in Styria has been rising faster than average. In a period of ten years, the number of winter guests from Hungary in the area of Murau has risen eight times as fast as the total number of vacationers. In the early summer of 2006, a symposium organized by the EU-project EUGEM will deal with the issue of "Integrated Tourism," in order to show new perspectives that opening up to the East may bring with it. The issue was broached at the general assembly of the EU Regional Management Upper Styria West on February 9, 2006, in which Ludwig Rader and project manager Georg Tafner of the Department for European Affairs and External Relations of the Regional Government of Styria presented the EU-project "EUGEM - EUropaGEMeinde" to the responsible bodies.
The EU Regional Management Upper Styria West features all relevant political decision-makers of the districts Knittelfeld, Judenburg, and Murau. As a EUGEM-partner, the Regional Management deals with the main issues of the European Municipalities (EUropaGEMeinden) of Upper Murtal. On the other hand, a symposium is being prepared to take place in early summer - simultaneous with the well-known "Almrausch Festival" on the Turracher Höhe. The symposium will primarily discuss the regional issues "wood" and "tourism" with other European regions.
"What an occasion to show the our citizens what our membership in the European Union has done for us," said experts from the Department of European Affairs. Rader cordially thanked the present President of the Regional Management and Member of the Styrian Parliament, Heinz Grabner, for his long standing commitment as Europe spokesperson of the Social Democrat parliamentary party. Grete Gruber, mayor of Judenburg and newly elected President of the Regional Management, was presented the EU-Information-Box. With the support of the European Union, this information material should contribute to citizens of Western Upper Styria receiving clear information about Europe and the EU.
